A Dietitians’ Take on #ads and Food Industry Bias

Do you sometimes see #ad and think, “This person is trying to influence what I buy.” Or … Do you scroll right by it? Perhaps you don’t even notice that it’s an ad at all or what that really means?

Nutrition bias? Industry influence? Sponsorship?
When a profitable company is seeking Dietetic professionals to create advertisements for their product they are asking you to influence the market although most prefer the term ‘educate’. Why? Because we’re the biggest influencers of the food market.

I interviewed Ontario based Dietitian Mark to talk about what he thinks the barriers to healthy eating are. We had a lot we agreed on and we want to spend some time in the kitchen cooking with Gordon Ramsay.

Mark advocates for balance in the diet and thinks we should have a greater focus on teaching children more about nutrition in schools.

“No one food will make or break your diet”

When a woman like Edwena talks about nutrition you’re going to want to listen to what she has got to say. Her family inspires her to cook, she loves learning from her aunts and she believes that all foods fit in a healthy diet. She thinks foods are for nourishing and not for demonizing.

She’s of the opinion that people should make cooking a priority and the government should be taxing overly processed foods while subsidizing local fruits and vegetables.

Cheese addictions and the (lack) of science behind them

The science behind a fear mongering news clip stating that cheese is as addictive as crack. Truth is that it probably isn’t and the media is just over reporting this hypothesis. So a new study on food came out, surprised?

This time we’re led to believe that cheese is as addictive as crack!

Do you know anyone who has critically cheesed themselves? I don’t and I’m a Registered Dietitian. I feel like if this was happening on the reg, I’d probably hear about it by now.

So what you aren’t reading in the papers is the following:

Apparently study was conducted by asking 500 people some questions from the YFAS (Yale Food Addiction Score ) the ambiguous questions on the YFAS can be found here. The study concluded that they have preliminary evidence (from a questionnaire) that not all foods are equally implicated in addictive like eating behaviours and that these foods were thought to be highly processed. Paleo, Chrono, Dieting, Science, Nerding, 310 diet.

Top 10 food swaps to improve your meals

These won’t necessarily decrease calories but can make a lighter meal, increase flavour and in some cases increase protein and decrease carbs.

My top 10 food swaps:

Plain yogurt for sour cream. I realize this is old news but it is great news. Use a greek yogurt to get the same tangy flavour while adding more protein to your meal.
Applesauce for fat. In your next batch of muffins or cake replace your fat called for 1:1 or use half the amount. (Recipe calls for 1 cup of oil, your choices are endless. Use some applesauce (or any fruit puree) and some oil or totally replace the oil with applesauce.
