Why Should you Care about Food Security?

We’re living in a wealthy, healthy, privileged and developed country, we’re actually so privileged that we’ve masked the inequality that exists in our country. Health and wealth are correlated in Canada. The people with the four times the food insecurity rates also have the lowest life expectancies in the country. It’s a cycle that continuously affects the whole population through healthcare spending (tax dollars)- Canada can’t spend less on healthcare until everyone has equal opportunities for health.
Food banks are kind of like a band-aid… a necessary band-aid but band-aids don’t heal wounds or problems, they cover them. Policy intervention must take place in order to help those who are food insecure so that they can continuously have adequate food in their home. Adequate food is affordable and is nutritious. Adequate food is also food that the person knows how to prepare and has the tools to do so.

An Open Letter to Nancy Greene Raine

My open letter to Nancy Greene Raine supporting her proposed bill to amend the FDA with a historical legislation proposal that could make a lasting impact on the youth of her country. She committed to the suggestion that the Food and Drug Act should be amended, moving to make it illegal to direct advertising and marketing toward children across the country.

Entrepreneur, Pharmacist and Politician- Norm Talks about Food and Participation

If you could tell the general public one message about food, nutrition or health what would you say?
I think the most significant thing I’d like people to know is that your health is in your hands to control. Each person needs to have an active level of participation in your own healthcare and your quality of life.
That ranges from the choices you make with consumption of food, types of food you eat, the level of exercise you participate in as well as your involvement and knowledge of your own body and health care treatment.
This means you need to be an active participant in collaboration with your healthcare team which could be your doctor, pharmacist, nurse, dietitian etc. You need to participate, for example, a person who has diabetes may have to participate more but everyone needs to participate on a level.

The (healthy) overweight individual

No one’s weight defines who they are as a person.
I’ve seen another person attacked on social media solely due to their weight in Alberta. Some people are trying to discredit the knowledge and ability of overweight individuals due to the fact that they are visibly overweight.
WHAT THE FUDGE ???
Health is a multifactorial state that truly cannot be easily defined. Quite often a person’s appearance does not define whether they are healthy or not.

Spice-cubes

What to do with your fresh spices before they spoil or rot in the fridge. Try making spice-cubes next time fresh spices are on sale, the bundles are large at the farmers market or yours are close to going off.
