What is your favorite food that your clients would consider unhealthy?
Muffins. I love muffins.
What do you think the government should be focusing on to improve public health?
Many people simply don’t understand the foundations of healthy eating. We need to educate the public on healthy eating and have more information available on the dangers of underpriced over-processed foods.
Laureen, if you were going to be stuck on an island for months and you could bring an unlimited supply of 4 foods, what would they be?
I really like dairy so cheese or yogurt … I’d need a good carbohydrate so probably bagels or muffins, definitely water and oranges so I don’t get some crazy disease like scurvy.
If you could get a message out to the public about food or nutrition, is there anything you’d want to say?
Try to eat ‘well’ most of the time rather than attempting to follow a regimented diet you can’t sustain. Think of it as lifestyle changes rather than a diet!
It’s idealistic but do you think one person can make a change?
Do you have any horrible or hilarious cooking/eating experiences you’d like to share?
A long time ago I tried to make someone [who was courting me] a very special meal. I was young and I was counting on everything being perfect, however, dinner preparations had not been going well. While I was making the potato salad I noticed I didn’t have enough eggs boiled so I put a few in the microwave. When I took them out, proud of my time cutting measures, they exploded … Everywhere … On my face, in my hair and all over my clothes.
I was dripping in half-cooked eggs when he told me ‘you’ve got egg on your face’. I learned to never microwave eggs in the shell that night!
S’mores or cupcakes or cake?
Raw or cooked vegetables?
Raw or steamed, I’ll eat any vegetable as long as it’s not soggy.
Does your job get in the way of what you eat?
No, definitely not.
Do you have any nutrition or diet pet peeves?
I think most fad diets are misleading and ineffective. I understand why people try diets but they are a quick fix and not a long-term solution. I try to teach clients to think more about being healthy and less about losing weight and it will happen naturally.
If you can’t find Laureen “at her home” in the Physiotherapy Department, she’s probably in the gym showing off her hard-earned abs while teaching a fitness class.
