If You’re Cheating On Your Diet- Break UP!

Diana and I used to ride the bus together every day. Our bond grew over the mutual disdain for politics within our nutrition program. Our companionship continued through our degrees and into our professional careers. I’ve been naturally skeptical for as long as I can remember but Diana was the first person to introduce me to an elevated level of skepticism that was lightly laced with cynicism.


We started the interview amid her cat’s interruption of jealous meows.

Do you have any hilarious cooking stories to share?
In Home Ec in junior high school my partner found a centipede in the flour and put it in the recipe and still served it to the class. In these days it would probably be all the rage. But when I found out what she had done it I thought it was horrible and that if anyone found out we’d fail. I was too scared to say anything.

What is your favorite food that people may consider unhealthy?
I have so many … I think potatoes get a bad rap but they aren’t my favorite food. So maybe bread.

Do you think one person can make a difference in public health policy change?
One person alone, no. There is too much to be done and too many things ingrained within the system. We need buy in from everyone to change and it needs to come from both the top and the bottom.

I hope that things can change but we need the general consumers and the general population to want change for it to happen.

What do you think the government should be focusing on within the realm of public health and policy?
From a federal standpoint, I think they should help farmers to build a better industry for them to grow vegetables and fruits and work on fixing the food system. The current subsidized industries are just helping keep less healthy highly processed foods artificially inexpensive while fruits and vegetables are comparatively more expensive.

We delved into a conversation about the federal government’s decision to dismantle the Sodium Task Force.

If you were going to be stuck on an island for months and you could bring an unlimited supply of 4 different foods, what would they be?
Peanut butter for sure, I’m trying to be smart about it too … I would bring flour, eggs. Is there going to be water?
Up to you.
Water too. I think might die of scurvy.

What would be your favorite food/drink that The Food Babe says you shouldn’t consume?
Is there anything that she says you should consume? Probably bread, I’m sure she has something against bread.

What is your favorite breakfast if you could have any breakfast in the world?
French toast.

If you could get a message out to the general public about food or nutrition, what would it be?
Don’t get so caught up in the little things. Everyone is so caught up in micronutrients, potential toxins and superfoods but it’s not about the little stuff, it’s about your overall diet.

Any diet pet peeves?
Anything that is restrictive and faddish. Clean eating and cheat days too. If you’re cheating on your diet then you should probably break-up with it.
