Dr. Train is a Family Physician in downtown Calgary. He says he’s a skeptic by nature, and a newly converted optimist to the notion that we can affect healthcare transformation for the better if we open our minds to what is possible.
He candidly spoke to me about issues with food labeling, chocolate breakfast cereal, and public policy.
Anthony, what’s your favorite breakfast of all time?
Probably Coco Pops. I haven’t had them in years but as a kid I loved them. Even as a teenager I’d eat them for dinner if I could.
What is your favorite food that people may consider unhealthy … something that the general public might think you wouldn’t eat?
What do you think our biggest societal barriers to healthy eating are?
Our access to healthy food is extremely poor. People don’t know what is healthy and food labeling is problematic. There are so many confusing messages promoted by advertising about food that is seriously hindering our ability to make good decisions food.
What do you think the government should be focusing on within the realm of public health and policy?
I think we should be taxing some unhealthy foods, like sugar added beverages. We should be doing everything we can to help people make better decisions about the food they eat. We also should be reducing the allowable amount of sodium in foods for vascular risk reduction purposes.
If we did that, what would we do with the hypothetical profits from a levy?
Build an improved infrastructure to treat chronic disease and subsidize healthier food options.
What’s your favorite thing to cook?
If you could cook a meal with anyone, who would it be?
Trent Reznor [of Nine Inch Nails].
If you could sit down to a meal with anyone, who would it be?
If you were going to be stuck on an island and you could bring an unlimited supply of 4 different foods, what would they be?
Avocados would be a good one, rice is not my favorite food but as a carbohydrate it’s calorically dense, easy to cook and it would store well. Umm, four … I can think of four medical drugs I would take on an island, but the food is tough to think of. Maybe eggs, if they were fertilized, so I could farm chickens and bananas.
What’s your favorite food/drink that The Food Babe says you shouldn’t consume?
Any carbonated beverage that has artificial sweeteners, I think she is against all artificial sweeteners.
If you could get a message out to the general public about food, what would it be?
